Breaking the Rules Again: Colorful Friday

It's that time of year again! The holidays are upon us once more. For most of us, that means our turkey and cranberry jelly-stuffed little bellies will be hitting all our favorite shopping hot spots in search of the best deals on Black Friday. We break the rules all the time as Lilly lovers, so why not break tradition once more and give Black Friday a cheery new name? From now on we will refer to Black Friday as COLORFUL Friday to better suit our lively wardrobes.

So where are these deals I'm speaking of? And is there Lilly involved?! My answer: of course! Colorful Friday means lots of deals for all you Lilly lovers, and while Melanie and I can't share our sale information, as Dillard's doesn't really participate in the whole Black Friday charade, we can keep you informed of all sorts of other awesome deals so you can scoop up some new Lilly pieces for your super sunny closet!

First off, Lilly Pulitzer via shops, signature stores, corporate stores and online are having a GWP (gift with purchase) promo where you receive a free shopping tote with any purchase on full-price merchandise. With any $75 expenditure, you'll receive a wash and wear printed laundry bag: probably one of the cutest and most handy GWPs ever! Perfect for your holiday vacay! Additionally, when you order online, you'll have the option of adding printed gift wrap for only $2, which will also come with a cute printed luggage tag!

Ok, so let's talk some more deals. Here are some Lilly shops that are offering Colorful Friday doorbusters, if you're so lucky as to live nearby, and other deals for Lilly lovers all over the map online!

Palm Village always has some of the best Lilly steals! They're also offering a $25 gift card for every $250 purchase, so you're essentially earning 10% back to spend on more Lilly! An extra 20% will be taken off sale merchandise; if you don't live within close proximity to one of these three fabulous stores, you can visit their individual stores' pages on Facebook (Asheville), (Knoxville), and (Mandeville) or call one of the stores to order for Colorful Friday.

Lilly "Holy Grail Prints", etc.

In the secondary Lilly markets of eBay/Facebook/Instagram/Poshmark/ThredUp (which I will refer to as "The Lilly Community" for purposes of length), "holy grail" items are relatively agreed upon among these ladies. "Holy grail" items contain prints that almost everyone wants. They can attain HG status when they become sold out or long after they have been released. As far as I know, this is the first attempt for anyone to compile a list, and HG items are somewhat subjective, so I tried taking an objective approach and consulting others to make this list. Holy grail items are difficult to find and when they are listed, frequently attract buyers willing to spend a pretty penny to obtain their unicorn of a Lilly piece. Most recently, the "Written in the Sun" print from the Spring 2014 Lilly collection was able to sell on eBay for $250. These are $64 shorts, people.... That's nearly five times the original retail value! and include the following prints (in no particular order):

Dark N Stormy
As far as I know, this came in a worth shift, tote, men's tie and a Roslyn skirt.

Tusk in Sun

Came in a tank, Cassie dress, and Murfee scarf. Reprinted into a multicolor Murfette, Murfee, various Lifeguard Press items, and Elsa top and a navy and white Michele V-neck, Elsa top, Captiva tunic, and Eliza dress.

Let's Cha Cha (original)

Came in a Shoreline tote, Eliza dress, Cordon dress, Delia shift, floppy hat, popover, beach pants, beack skirt, beach shorts, Captiva tunic, and a Murfee scarf. Also appears in various lifeguard press items. Was reprinted in 2014 in a spa blue colorway that wasn't quite as popular.

You Gotta Regatta

Came in a shoreline plastic tote, men's shorts and swim trunks, a fabric tote, Callahan shorts, maxi dress and a few shift dresses.

Hotty Pink First Impression

Originally appeared in Babs wrap and a few shifts; has been made into various lifeguard press items and an Elsa.

Magenta Bazaar

Appeared only in a Dusk tank and an Elsa. Recent release so it's pretty scarce and tricky to find these days.

Written in the Sun

Appeared in a pair of Callahans and a few Minnie's items.

Swingers

Not exactly sure what all this appeared in but it's GORGEOUS and of course, a very rare find. Reprinted into wine glasses for holiday 2014 by Lifeguard Press.

Resort White Pop

Released in Sandrine and Lowe shifts, as well as a pair of Clifton sample shorts found at the Warehouse sale. Also can be found in Minnie's items. The blue colorway was also released but didn't fare as well.

Let them Eat Cake

Appeared in a Cissy skirt and shift dress, as well as Minnie's items

.

Stuffed Shells

Appeared in a Worth shift, maxi and skirt; re-released in an Elsa.

Then there are what is considered by the Lilly community as "personal holy grail items". But let's not forget: while a holy grail can be a personal holy grail, a personal holy grail is not always a true holy grail. Personal holy grail items are prints or products that certain individuals are in search of, or ISO, for their personal Lilly closet. They may be popular prints or more obscure, whichever the individual desires.  More often than not, the price is considerably lower for a personal holy grail item as opposed to a true HG.

Here are some personal holy grail items as described by the Lilly community (again, in random order):

Pool Blue Southern Charm, released in 2014.
Came in a Briella fit and flare and a Braylen tunic.
Also released in Hotty Pink Eaton shift and Callahans.
  • Hops N Pops
  • Crème Fraiche
  • Pool Blue Southern Charm
  • Gimme Some Leg
  • Lulu
  • Bling My Chimes
  • Loopy
  • Summer Mix Tape
  • Spin the Bottle
  • Skinny Dipping
  • Hotty Pink Lemonade
  • Jungle Glam
  • In the Beginning
  • Fancy Fest
  • Florida print
  • Crown Jewels
Now, if you were to search any of the aforementioned sites  (except for Facebook, as you could expect for the ever-so-knowledgeable ladies of the Lilly community to come down on you like a ton of bricks for labeling an item you like as a "Holy Grail" when it really isn't one), you'll find that the use of "Holy Grail item" is painstakingly liberal (and that's an understatement). Seriously, for any Lilly lover, finding "Holy Grail" next to, say, a newly released print or a downright hideous one like Roar of the Jungle (just my opinion) is just as laughable as finding a listing for a Let's Cha Cha original item for less than $50 (while it happens, the offense is usually committed by a newbie to the secondary Lilly market). If you really want a good laugh, type "Lilly Pulitzer Holy Grail" into the search bar on eBay. Hilarious.

FREE SHIPPING THOUGH. L-O-effing-L!
This poses a few questions: one, who is buying an item at a 500% markup, and two, why are they buying it at such a high price? Some ladies do it out of desperation- they just love the item and are DYING to have it (full disclosure: if I had the money I would probably justify my purchase in a similar manner). Others collect certain prints/styles. There is a woman I have seen posting on a Lilly Facebook group who has every pair of Callahans ever known to be produced as of Fall 2014. On another group, a lady posted a picture of every style in which the print You Gotta Regatta is featured. Finally, there are the Lilly zombies who half-consciously roam the internet in the middle of the night because they are always, ALWAYS in the Lilly mindset. First thing they see is a charge on their bank card in the morning, followed by the delivery of a $300 shift dress they had no business buying in the first place! (I may or may not be speaking from personal experience).

What are some of your holy grail items, and how much would you pay for them? For me, it's the Dark and Stormy Worth Shift or the Fountain Hopping Delia, though I have many other pieces that I'd love to find from previous years at full price, or current season at less than retail :)

Lilly Loungewear

Typical Day Off Work Outfit: Leona Zip Up, custom Lilly t-shirt, and Nike Legend 2.0 Pants! Print on print is always so much fun!
I wear at least one Lilly item at almost all times. It's a compulsive behavior, really, but I feel practically naked without something Lilly adorning my body. As my personal Lilly collection has taken over the vast majority of my closet, I've taken to collecting more and more Lilly basics and wearing Lilly casually, as opposed only when I dress up. Now don't get me wrong: I still love my Nike yoga pants, and until Lilly starts making baseball caps (fat chance), I'll be sporting my favorite goody from my annual trip to the Masters tournament when I head out for some mid-day froyo or a walk in the park with my fatty-patty Beagle, Petunia. But wearing Lilly is a subconscious priority when I get dressed for the day, whether it's for work or play.

Monogram Lilly Pulitzer applique t-shirt, $25.
Available at SydneySaySew.com!

One of my most favorite casual Lilly items doesn't bear the ubiquitous pink Lilly tag; instead, it bears the name of Comfort Colors. Sydney Whaley of SydneySaysSew.com makes custom Lilly t-shirts and other apparel for very reasonable prices. She has a huge selection of items and Lilly prints and does custom orders, so whatever you're looking for, if she doesn't have it, she'll make it! There are several other Etsy shops, like Melanie's personal favorite, LillyDuds. These shops make it really easy to sport Lilly 24/7... Because really, who can get enough of it?!

Melanie has also had very good experiences with Etsy shop LillyDuds. Here she is in class today sporting her sorority Tri-Sigma's letters in Hotty Pink First Impressions!

Melanie LOVES beach pants and has several pairs. I don't personally own any, but if what she says is true, I might have to invest in a pair soon. At 5'2", constant alterations can just be such a pain in the butt sometimes, so I prefer not having to deal with them. However, I did just buy some new Palazzo pants, so since an alterations trip is already in order, I might have to give in and buy the beach pants.

Lilly Pulitzer Beach pant in Brewster Blue Good Reef ($138, LillyPulitzer.com)

Here are some of our other favorite Lilly loungewear pieces:
1) Skipper Popover and/or Leona Zip Up: Made with soft terry cotton, the Skipper is an essential investment for any Lilly lover. Usually has a coordinated printed pair of beach pants, and if not, will work with one of the solid color beach pants. Perfect if you love to exercise in cool weather or live on the breezy beach. Try the Skipper in Lilly's Lounge paired with black beach pants.

2) Tabbie tank: Lilly pima cotton is unparalleled in terms of quality. The Tabbie tank is great for layering or lounging, and even working out (of course, if that's your thing!) Comes in prints and solids. Try it underneath your Skipper popover!

3) Michele/Jodie V-neck: Again with that pima cotton. The Michele usually comes in solid colors that perfectly match your printed Callahans for summer as well as the season's most popular prints. For winter? The Jodie's got your arms covered. Both are perfect for layering during the colder months. Try the Lipstick Pink Michele with Trunk Show Callahan shorts, or the Jodie in Trunk Show with a white Syd puffer vest!

4) Eliza slub dress: The Eliza is a quintessential Lilly piece that is as versatile as any Lilly piece comes. Wear it as sleepwear, a bathing suit coverup, by itself, or even with leggings/tights and a vest. I love pairing mine with a Montauk necklace for a dinner date at home with my handsome boyfriend.

Lilly for Your Fur Minnies!

Lilly and her cats by Lilly 5x5
Fancy Fest print
Cats, both wild and domestic, are frequent subjects of many Lilly prints, including Crazy Cat House, Fancy Fest,  Sunnyside Cabana, Tiger Lilly, and many more. The frequent appearance of greater and smaller cats is a homage to Lilly's love of cats. One would imagine that she made custom Lilly collars for her managerie of kitties. While Lilly is no longer with us, her legacy lives on in our hearts, on our sleeves bearing feline prints, and even on the collars of our beloved fur Minnies.

Like Lilly, Melanie considers herself "one of the biggest cat ladies you'll ever meet", apparent in her many kitty selfies on Facebook and adoration of all Lilly prints with cats in them! I'll admit it: cats kind of give me the creeps, and I don't trust men who only like cats. However, I do enjoy observing the majestic greater cats and some of the smaller wild cats, like cheetahs and bobcats and personally promote efforts towards their conservation (side note: if you haven't seen "The Elephant in the Living Room" on Facebook, you should really consider watching, especially if you're an animal lover).

Melanie's fur babies in their adorable custom collars! (Sophie, Lilly, and Rachel, in that order; their collars were made by Lillyduds on Etsy!)

Whether you have a cat or dog, it's a good idea to have a collar and tag, and for dogs, a leash and possibly a harness. I personally prefer the services of Gloria Baker of Pawsitive Style. I've ordered both a leash and collar from her for my little fuzz nugget Petunia the Beagle, and am contemplating ordering a harness (Petunia is very social and loves to pull on her leash when she sees other pups at the park!) which Gloria said she'd custom make for me in a heartbeat if the pre-established sizing was too small for my little peanut! Gloria was also very prompt in getting my order to me as soon as possible. You could tell the fabric was authentic Lilly, and that it was very well made. She's also super sweet and a pleasure to do business with.

Why I Wear Lilly

I think it's a shame that the girls I work with at my Lillypad do not subscribe to the ideology of the Lilly Pulitzer brand and all it represents, in the same manner that I do. Thank God I have found Melanie to obsess over Lilly with!!

Melanie, Specialist from Dillard's Rock Park in Little Rock, AR, aka my Lilly Bestie and partner in crime on this blog!

Yes, Lilly is nauseatingly cheery and bright, and sure, maybe I do dress like I am vacationing in Palm Beach 365 days out of the year even though sometimes it gets pretty cold here in Texas. But Lilly is the first brand of clothing I've worn that I feel impacts who I am as a person.
Some purchases from the Resort365 Collection :)

I often say that I do not want to associate with people who do not bring out the best in me and vice versa. The same motto applies to clothing. I don't wear clothes that do not bring out the best of me either. It makes perfect sense. Slipping on that pretty printed fabric makes me feel happier than I have ever felt in any clothing.  I used to dread putting outfits together for myself- even though I do believe my taste is quite cavalier- because I did not feel comfortable and beautiful in the trendy pieces I was choosing to wear, quite frequently opting for sorority tees and Nike yoga pants with a Vineyard Vines popover and a Masters Tournament baseball cap. I would even sometimes skip events because I could not find anything that I felt confident in, despite having an overstuffed and plentiful closet of designer clothes. My self confidence was slowly dying and needed a serious revival. I found that in my first Lilly purchase. In summer 2012, I gave in to the urge to buy my first Lilly piece- Callahan shorts in "You Gotta Regatta". My mom had dressed me in Lilly at times as a little girl, but I had never pursued exploring the brand on my own.

You Gotta Regatta Callahan shorts. Borrowed photo!
I can't explain the instant connection to the Lilly heritage I felt putting on those shorts. It felt like sunshine instantly started seeping through my skin, sending waves of happiness through my veins and warming my heart in a way I can't explain. Positivity and the urge to adventure and have fun was abundant in the aura surrounding me as I wore the shorts. Not to mention, they fit perfectly and were more comfortable than any pair of shorts I had ever put on.
A typical day-at-work outfit: White Amalie cardigan, Bait and Switch Dune top, Navy J. Crew Frankie Chinos, Jack Rogers Delfino Platinum Flats, J. Crew Cluster Pearls, James Avery and David Yurman Silver Bracelets, and Lilly GWP Tortoise and Gold Bangles!

As my Lilly addiction grew and grew, so did my collection. I began wearing the clothes I once referred to as looking like "the Easter bunny had vomited all over them" every single day. I even took a job working with Lilly. Knowing that I am not wearing at least one Lilly piece at all times makes me feel a shred of guilt for some reason, like I've cheated on a longtime lover. I don't foresee myself giving up Lilly any time in the near future, but if it ever happens I will always have fond memories of the brand that helped me transform into the woman I am today!

Lilly has become a part of my essence and being. I wouldn't be who I am today without it. I wear Lilly because it brings out the best in me in every possible way. And it's always summer somewhere, right!?

Every Lilly Lover's Dilemma...

Before You Say Goodbye to Your Summer Lilly...
So long, sweet #SummerinLilly! Or maybe not?

When winter rolls around, every Lilly lover must face a common dilemma: how do I wear my spring/summer Lilly through the winter? Is it kosher to wear bright/white prints from the time everyone collectively trades in their swimsuits for their Maddie fleece coats? For those of us who wear Lilly religiously, we know that packing up that silky sea of resort white, spa blue, lipstick pink and new green can be as difficult as sending your first child off to college. So why should you do something so heartbreaking? Melanie and I have similar takes on the subject, which falls perfectly in line with Lilly's #Resort365 theme: BREAK THE RULES. Don't put the Lilly away (with the exception of your bikinis, those won't see the light of day for quite a while unless you're on vacay)!

How To Wear Summer Lilly in the Winter
One thing I love about Melanie is her willingness to experiment; she's a very adventurous fashionista! As the cold weather approached and inevitably set in over in Arkansas, Melanie made a very solid attempt at piecing together a few Lilly pieces for a complete winter-proof look. Of course, it's not my favorite outfit ever, but generally speaking she does a fantastic job at incorporating the nautical, overtly summery tones of Osterville patch with a pair of leggings, a Lilly striped Mariella sweater, navy tights to match her Getaway vest, and neutral tone boots to wrap up this warm yet very Lilly look.

We both recommend buying a Lilly vest and investing in a few solid-color pairs of HUE brand tights. While the vest is a bit pricey, you can layer it over your thin, cotton Eliza dress and wear a matching or neutral pair of tights to keep your legs warm. The Murfee scarf is another Lilly classic, of which you'll never amass enough. A silk-cashmere blend, Murfees are released year round, and compliment any outfit year-round. They can also be used as a pashmina to simply cover your shoulders over a strapless dress.

As our girl Lilly says, BREAK THE RULES! Photo courtesy of LillyPulitzer.com.
I'm sure most Lilly wearers can all agree that "don't wear white after labor day" is more antiquated than your great-grandmother's pearls. In this article, "What the Lilly Pulitzer Team Wears to Work", you'll see that almost every one of Lilly's leading ladies (and sole gentleman) interviewed at the Pink Palace says they subscribe to the ideology of wearing white year-round. As Lilly web designer Blair Billman explains, "I feel so pretty and feminine in white—definitely not limiting that to one season!" These are the people who are behind the bright and fun prints you know and love, so if they say it's ok to wear white, I agree with them.

For a winter white, Lilly in wonderland look, pair the Chrissy gold beaded cameo white shift dress ($298) with the Kent getaway cameo white quilted jacket ($298). Flawless, bold, and daring, this outfit is guaranteed to illicit the same compliments and Lilly essence as the most abstract, colorful summer shift. If you would like to add a gold accent, go for the new gold printed jacquard scarf (LillyPulitzer.com, $198) and the timeless gold resort wedge ($198, Lilly Pulitzer.com). Photos courtesy of LillyPulitzer.com.

Here are some of my personal resort white must-haves from Lilly:
1. Luxury Capris in cameo/resort white
2. Chrissy beaded shift dress in cameo white
3. Syd vest in resort white
4. Topanga lace dress in resort white
5. Gold and cameo white ottoman Brielle fit and flare dress

So how can you "pull off" wearing Lilly in the winter?

Photo courtesy of Lilly5x5 on IG
For one, be your Lilly loving self. You're confident enough to wear bold, patterned prints that rival the Easter bunny's delivery of candy stuffed plastic eggs on the color scale, so why should you abandon or neglect your favorite Lilly pieces in favor of drab, lifeless black all winter? Who cares if you stick out- you already do! So, you love the brand new She She Shells Janice you scored at an awesome price during the After Party Sale in August, but have yet to wear it? What's the harm in throwing a navy Amalie over it and heading out the door?

You're the Life of the Party: So Own It!
Regardless of how much of a rule-follower or conservative you may be, those who already know you probably love your livelihood and energetic spirit. Your wearing Lilly is apart of your infectious happiness and joy for life and all it has to offer. They likely unconsciously expect you to show up to an event in the dead of winter wearing Lilly's classic fashions, and just like Lilly herself, everyone knows you're the life of the party!
